CINERGI (Community Inventory of EarthCube Resources for Geoscience Interoperability) is an EarthCube Building Block project focused on creating a large cross-domain registry of information resources and improving their metadata descriptions for better discovery. Three types of use cases are being developed within the project: 1) use cases focused on data facilities who want to ensure high quality and completeness of their metadata and spend significant effort on manual metadata curation; 2) use cases focused on several geoscience Research Coordination Network projects wishing to assemble resources used in their domains; and 3) geoscientists in several disciplinary domains including paleogeoscience, hydrology, climate modeling, geochemistry, metagenomics, sedimentology, stratigraphy, and critical zone science, interested in discovering information resources needed for their research. The first group of use cases is supported by CINERGI metadata curation pipeline. The pipeline relies on a geoscience-wide ontology, a range of metadata enhancement components, provenance and validation tools to automatically improve existing metadata and present results to data facility curators for approval. The second group of use cases is enabled by CINERGI Community Resource Viewers – online applications for crowdsourcing community resource registry development, curation and search. The third group of use cases does not have a complete solution due to typical complexity of queries and extent of disciplinary knowledge required to answer them. For this case, we provide a mechanism to enhance CINERGI inventory by registering additional resources and associated vocabularies. The poster will present key project results in response to these three groups of challenges.
