Poster presented at the 2015 All Hands Meeting.
Most Earth Science disciplines depend on the availability of samples collected above, at, and beneath Earth’s surface, on the moon and in space, or generated in experiments. During EarthCube Domain End-user workshops, scientists from many Earth Science domains have expressed the need to enhance access and sharing of scientific samples and collections. The Internet of Samples in the Earth Sciences (iSamplES) RCN aims to address this demand. iSamplES is building, growing, and fostering a new community of practice, in which domain scientists, curators of sample repositories and collections, museums, computer and information scientists, software developers and engineers and technology innovators engage in and collaborate on defining, articulating, and addressing the needs and challenges of digital sample and collection management as a critical CI component. This is done through workshops, working groups, and community engagement efforts that focus on socialization, knowledge creation, and the development of best practices for the registration, description, identification, and citation of physical specimens. We will report on the results of the iSamples Stakeholder Alignment survey, the first iSamples workshops, and the prototype of the isamplES knowledge hub as well as the engagement with EarthCube Building Block projects CINERGI and GeoLink.
